My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

I am a patient-focused, primary care physician that believes in personalized care. I believe that a patient is a unique individual, not a number or a group. My approach aligns very closely with my values and goals for your care. As an MDVIP-affiliated primary care physician, I will be able to increase the preventive care I provide to help improve your well-being and quality of life. Similar to conveniences often associated with concierge medicine practices, I also offer same- or next-day appointments that start on time.

I was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. Both of my parents were physicians, as are two of my siblings. I am a graduate of Columbia University, with a degree in Applied Physics Engineering. I worked for a local chemical company before realizing that it was not my calling. I returned to school and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1997. I completed my residency at Christiana Care in 2000 and have been practicing with an individualistic approach in Wilmington since that time.

I am a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Delaware Academy of Medicine and an appointed Clinical Instructor for the Christiana Care Family Practice residency program, as well as Jefferson Medical College students. I am affiliated with the Christiana Care Hospital system.

from Katherine in DE March 22, 2020 for Matthew M. O'Brien, MD

Last year I broke my leg and luckily, I did not require surgery . My 9 week stint on crutches was coming to an end and I was so pleased to be able to start walking. However , when I resumed walking with enthusiasm, I developed moderate to severe swelling and pain of my foot and calf below the fractured Tibia. Dr O'Brien arranged a visit and provided important reassurance that this… See more

His humor and ability to connect takes the uneasiness levels way down. He is on top of his game and always follows up with me to confirm any questions. I have referred friends to him before and would… See more

Dr. O’Brien is an excellent diagnostician. He is a doctor who intently listens to his patients then, thoughtfully asks questions. Often he’ll consult a web site that can help me but most often he quickly diagnoses the problem. He is never hesitant to consult another doctor if necessary, or order tests to aid in his diagnosis. He also recommends specialists who treat specific ailments or… See more
